As part of a project funded by the US National Science Foundation, a postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Geology & Geophysics in Foraminiferal ecology / geomicrobiology.
The department of Geology and Geophysics is seeking a Postdoctoral Investigator to join their team. This is a temporary full-time position and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of an extension.
The project seeks to identify how the integrative genetic, metabolic, and physiological response of selected benthic foraminifera allows their survival under different oxygen regimes. The successful candidate will play a key role in the project, joining a larger team including geobiologists (foraminiferal ecology and physiology), geochemists (reactive oxygen species; nitrogen cycling), and computational metabolic modelers. The successful candidate will (1) be experienced with transcriptome library preparation, sequencing, annotation, and data analyses and will be responsible for performing those analyses on foraminifera maintained under different conditions; (2) be responsible for running ~3-week experiments housed in an environmental cold room; (3) participate in a research cruise (~9 days total) off Southern California; (4) assist with specimen isolation and preparations.
Performs such other duties as the supervisor may, from time to time, deem necessary.
DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Recent Ph.D. graduates in Ocean Sciences, Biology, or related disciplines are invited to apply. Strong preference will be given to candidates with multidisciplinary research interests and demonstrated accomplishments in related research areas, especially those with experience in benthic foraminiferal ecology and physiology, and/or protistan transcriptomic analysis. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of an extension based on performance and funding availability, for a maximum of 2 years.
Sea duty required (must go to sea once).

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to ability to lift less than 25lb one to three times per day and carry up to 25lb one to three times per day as well as reaching above and below the shoulders and pushing. Position is mostly sedentary with occasional standing/ walking. Must have the ability to use hands for fine manipulation. Visual abilities to include depth perception, peripheral vision, hearing, traveling as well as ability to perform microscopy. The occupational requirements for this position are the ability to work with and around other individuals as well as alone. May be exposed to excessive cold, odorous chemicals or specimens and sometimes prolonged working hours. Excessive cold exposure refers to working in a 7 degree C environmental room, performing periodic experiment set up and maintenance. Physical duties are subject to change.
SEA DUTY CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTIONS:
May work at least 8 hours per day and, at times in excess of 12 hours per day, 7 days per week. Sleep and work hours can deviate from those on land. May be expected to work on watch schedule (such as 8 hours on and 8 hours off or 12 hours on and 8 hours off) for all or part of a cruise or to work as hours are needed to accomplish the planned work. May need to travel during holidays and for long distances to and from foreign ports. May experience rudimentary living and working conditions, with shared and basic living quarters and laboratories. May experience bad or extreme weather conditions, including heavy seas, winter weather or hot, tropical weather. Work on deck may occur in both hot and cold conditions around the clock. Sea conditions will lead to active ship motion. Should be able to climb steep and vertical ladders and able to enter and exit compartments through hatches, doors, and sills. Should be able to carry heavy gear and participate in the loading and unloading of the ship as well as in the activities on deck and in the labs during the cruise. Shipboard environment may include: confined areas, shared sleeping quarters (berths) and bathroom facilities, small and basic berthing, fixed meal times and basic menus. Modest levels of heating, cooling, ventilation, and illumination, limited or no email and internet access and limited off-duty and recreational facilities (library, lounge, movies). May be exposed to potential allergens and irritants, including paint fumes. May experience constant and intermittent loud noises, and slippery and uneven surfaces.
